Who are we?
Krav Maga Systems is the leader of practical self-defence solutions and is dedicated to helping you learn the vital skills of Krav Maga. We serve our community with our passion and joy for teaching self-defence, defensive-tactics, fighting, combat and all topics around it. Our mission is to continously evolve and grow in all regards, to ensure we are always giving the most up-to-date, logical, realistic and honest training.
How did we come about?
Krav Maga Systems was founded by Senior Instructor Kurt Colpan and Instructor Daniela Lofaro on January 10th 2015. It was formed to create a difference in the world of Krav Maga, self-defence training and all the topics around it.
Kurt was the Director for one of the world's largest Krav Maga organisation in the world, for Australia and New Zealand. Here he worked on building a stronger community and to rid the politics, ego and lack of team work that had already become the status quo before he took on the role. He rebuilt the operations and the team after the organisation nearly fell off the map in this part of the world.
Daniela was the Lead Instructor for Assertive Action Krav Maga, Kurt's first Krav Maga School. Daniela saw the problems of the old organisation that Kurt used to lead and led the solution, creating the brand, co-creating the vision for the company and the innovation that is slowly coming to life. She was sick of the lack of practicality and felt that the solutions this organisation was giving were not realistic. She also saw first hand how dogmatic and political the environment was, and how the majority of them were just preserving an image, rather than being honest.
Kurt agreed, he saw things pretty much the same way. The time had come to create an environment where the self-defence training was honest, without the fancy unneccessaries and the stuff that really wouldn't work. The time had come to start to work on new programs outside of a traditional curriculum (which is the norm in the Krav Maga industry) that are designed to REALLY give a person real skills and knowledge in the shortest time possible. Also, he envisioned a place where 'real people can learn real skills', where the self-defence training is relevant and gives you a holistic and realistic understanding from day 1 (not 'when you get to level 2, you'll learn how to defend a stick attack').
At Krav Maga Systems we now have multiple self-defence, fighting and combat programs, ones that follow the traditional curriculum and others that are much more modern and practical in the short to medium term.
Our vision is to help each individual learn practical self-defence skills. Our environment builds confidence, personal-safety and overall well-being. It is our intention to allow people into an ego-free environment, where learning is of utmost importance. Our in-house programs and classes have students who are teachers, corporate professionals, police officers, military personnel, IT professionals and who are from a range of industries and ages.
The team at Krav Maga Systems is now over 10 Instructors, most in Sydney, but one from Perth and another in Hong Kong. Each individual is dedicated to the cause and each individual is highly enthusiastic, knowledgable and professional. We understand that without a solid team we are nothing and that the success of our organisation is dependant on them. We are focused on giving all our team and Instructors the highest level of training and support, so that they can help you.
We are constantly evolving, looking for better ways and keeping up-to-date so that what we provide you is always what we believe are the best possible solutions.
Why train with us?
We are focused on giving real solutions to real problems. We are not bound by tradition and we're not 'all Hollywood'. Lot's of Krav Maga schools and other self-defence and martial arts schools are overly fancy and complicated (or overly simplistic). The curriculums are designed to keep you there as long as possible, delaying you of practical knowledge until you've gone through a grading. The focus isn't really on you, it's on the money.
While we have a traditional curriculum, we offer you the choice of how you want to learn with the inclusion of many other self-defence programs. We value honesty, so all our curriculums and programs are designed to be practical, to the environment of Australia (and localised for other regions) and the types of threats and dangers we face. We also value holistic skills, so we will teach you all the skills associated with self-defence and fighthing (Krav Maga) which includes:
- Self-defence theory
- Krav Maga combatives and tools (striking and defences)
- Defence against grabs, chokes, sucker punches and holds
- Defence against multiple attackers
- Defence against weapon attacks (sticks, gun, knife)
- Ground fighting
- Takedowns and throws
What is Krav Maga?
Krav Maga teaches you a set of principles and techniques that are 'battle tested' for effectiveness under the unpredictable nature of physical conflict.'
Krav Maga is meant to work for everyone, regardless of their age, weight, height or physical limitations. Krav Maga teaches you how to use your situation, environment and natural instincts to your advantage. You train what you learn under realistic conditions so you are prepared for what could happen on the 'street'.
No one ever plans to be a victim of an assault; with the proper training you can educate yourself on recognising the warning signs before you become someone's target.
Throughout training you will learn physical and non-physical ways to avoid, prevent, defend and escape assaults. These assaults can include threats and attacks made:
- with weapons (such as sticks, knives and guns)
- by multiple attackers (group assaults with or without weapons)
- by unarmed attackers (punches, kicks, chokes, grabs, take downs and more)
- to you while on the ground (with and without weapons, with multiple attackers or a single attacker).
At first, the training can seem intimidating to some, this is because you are dealing with confronting scenarios, and in time you develop resilience to this. It is better to get yourself prepared for the emotional and physical requirements to survive an attack in a controlled environment, rather than leaving it to chance and not knowing what to do if you become a target.
Krav Maga teaches you to never give up in the face of conflict, it gives you a level of fitness you just can't get through gym workouts or bootcamps, and most importantly you gain life long skills that you will be able to apply years after training.
Krav Maga is a modern, relevant and proven reality-based defensive tactics system for men and women that was developed by Ex-IDF Chief Combat Instructor, Imi Lichtenfeld. Originally, it was developed for the Israel Defense Forces, now it is also taught to civilians, military, law enforcement and security personnel throughout the world. Based on simple principles and instinctive, natural movements of the human body, Krav Maga is designed to teach practical self-defence for the real world in the shortest possible time.
