V.I.P's of the Krav Maga World: Rick Blitstein

In 1977 Rick began his Krav Maga training while living in Israel on Kibbutz Ein Harrod Me’uchad.  He grew up learning kung-fu and was introduced to Krav Maga by several  “Kibbutzniks” that wanted to show him what he knew was not effective against real violence.

Rick soon learned that his new friends were in top commando units of the IDF, and they took him through some brutal training to show what Krav Maga was all about. During this time he was introduced to Grandmaster Imi Lichtenfeld.

Female Cop Shares Common Personal Safety Pitfalls Experienced by Women

Let's start this blog by stating obviously that a woman is NEVER at fault for being a victim of any type of assault. However, we all have the power to make choices that reduce our risk of being targeted. A female officer from the U.S. shared her tips for women to be safer in the daily lives. Please share this information with as many people as you know - it could save a life!

The officer's job was to review criminal and psychiatric files of imprisoned sex offenders who were approaching their release date. Through her reading of hundreds of files, she noticed some common pitfalls women had fallen into - pitfalls that could be avoided with some awareness to the subjects. Note: these tips can be applied to anyone really, but these are specific to scenarios that have lead to a woman being sexually assaulted.

How to Keep Your Krav Maga Real with Environmental Training

‘Krav Maga - the self-defence system for reality’... but, if you stay in the comfort of your own gym/dojo, then are you really preparing yourself 100% for reality?

Maybe, maybe not! We believe that if you’re not training in different environments and in different scenarios then you’re missing out on a vital part of Krav Maga training. When you don’t regularly put yourself in different environments, you can develop a false sense of reality and what is required of you to be successful in your personal protection.

Ditching the name 'Krav Maga'... It's time to get political

I’ll be talking to a guy (no names yet) on Friday on a new upcoming Krav Chats Podcast who is quite a popular Krav Maga student & teacher. Most people that know their shit, will be able to guess who I am talking about by the end of this post...

This guy has recently taken ‘Krav Maga’ off his brand name. He has done this because he feels KM has been too tainted with the BS from mainstream organisations and the politics that come with it. He claims that most do a lot of Krav Maga talk, but don't honour the principles and the axioms that Krav Maga is based on. His conflict lies in that he feels he is more Krav Maga than Krav Maga, but everyone else is claiming 'Krav Maga' even though they don't stay true to it.

Here's my perspective...

Got Rhythm? Learn how rhythms can make your Krav Maga more unpredictable.

Using different rhythms in Krav Maga can give you distinct advantages in many different situations. They can help you control the pace of a fight, create opportunities for counters and make you less predictable as a Krav Maga practitioner.

In most organisations, students will have to wait until they are at Graduate levels to learn this tactic. We disagree with this wait time, and think it is essential for a student to know at the beginning stages of their learning for the above benefits that it can provide. The following are the four main types of rhythms, with video examples where I show you what they should look like.

Killer Instinct

From Krav Maga Systems' perspective, to be effective at protecting ourselves, the 'killer instinct' is a quality that we all need to have. It is important to understand that the 'killer instinct' in this case does not refer to your ability to completely end someone. It is the 'x-factor' - that one thing that could be the difference between you surviving or being the victim.

Often when students first start out in Krav Maga training, particularly students who are new to the world of personal protection, they have a few emotional/mental barriers that stop them from switching into the killer instinct mode (or more accurately, being comfortable with it).

I'll Start Krav Maga When I am Fit

This is the most common objection we get in Krav Maga when newbies come in to try a class. Just a couple of weeks ago Senior Instructor Kurt had a girl come in and say that word-for-word. If we were to have a dollar for every time we hear that, we’d have at least a thousand bucks!

Is Being 'Good' Not Enough for You?

How to be the BEST at Krav Maga

I’m not going to lie and tell you this article is about being nice and dandy. It’s not! I know you want to be the best you can be and you want to be able to kick anyone's ass in any situation, you want to be untouchable (though you don’t admit it freely). It’s natural, we’ve all watched too much television and grown up in a world where violence has been glorified. We want to see ourselves as the hero who can function effectively  in the face of adversity and stick-it to the villains of the world.

Some usual and not-so-usual ways to train on your own (that actually work)

Solo Krav Maga Training S

Once in a while a student comes to me and says, ‘Kurt, what can I do at home to improve my Krav Maga?’ I think it is important that we all continue to keep our Krav fresh, so I thought I would write you a few simple ideas on what you can do on your own to improve your Krav Maga.

Emotional content in training.

Emotional Content Blog Post(1) Humans are emotional creatures. It's an essential part of our existence. The more stressful the situations we find ourselves in, the more emotions tend to take control of your actions. In self-defense, we're inherently dealing with some of the most stressful situations you can imagine. Life and death are determined in what are often very violent encounters with other human beings. They can be a benefit, certainly so for our normal functioning in our everyday lives. They're a large part of what enables us to interface with and understand other living creatures. They also get us into trouble. When emotion takes over in social interactions - more specifically, confrontations - rational thought gives way to fear, anger, conflict and violence.
