Women’s Empowerment: Why you don't need it.

Today, I wanted to make a post about one of THE most common motifs in the female self-defence/martial arts industry - Women’s Empowerment.

It’s a nice enough message, and I can see the sincerity in wanting to help women become capable of protecting themselves - and as a result, become empowered.

As a member of the female community, my major issue with this marketing angle is that it suggests women are lacking a quality of character which they can only gain through the type of training being offered.

NEWS FLASH LADIES!!

You. Are. Already. Empowered.

Kids Self-defence: What You Need to Know

Do you want your kids to really know how to defend themselves from physical danger?

The skill to protect oneself from physical danger is something most parents want for their kids. Typically they will do a search for a local ‘self-defence’ school or martial art club to start their kids on that journey.

It’s great that parents are proactive about giving their kids the chance to learn the skills that will last them a lifetime. We believe having this training is just as important as learning how to read, write and do math - it is a crucial life-skill (one they may never need to use, but one that they cannot afford to be without).

The 5 Most Common Attacks Women Face

Vital Points: Get 'em where it *really* hurts!

When it comes to situations that call for you to protect yourself, it is almost a guarantee that what you face in reality will not be the same as what you experience in training. A lot of factors will come into play and you may find yourself having to modify what you've practiced so that it works for the conflict you are facing.

The wonderful thing about Krav Maga is that it has a few core principles that when followed allow you to adapt your self-defence skills in these unpredictable situations. One of these corner-stone principles is to be efficient and effective in your actions by striking to Vital Points.

The 'Aggression Switch'

Don't Be Afriad To Break The Rules

By Andrew Chan, Krav Maga Systems Instructor - Perth Australia

One of the best quotes I've come across in krav maga self-defence is as follows:

"In Krav Maga, we say that fighting for your life is no game, so you have to discard all notions of fair play". -David Kahn

To me, this quote beautifully puts into context the attitude you need to survive. Attitude/mindset is a skill just as important as any technique you'll learn. Having the right balance in attitude is vital to your functionality and survivability. There are one of two extremes you don't want to be when dealing with a life-threatening problem. Firstly, you don't want to be a doormat and allow people to walk over you. (This is different from being submissive but that's another story). If you do so in self-defence, don't be surprised if you end up dead, raped, or hanging from a noose.

Don't be afraid to break the rules

Don't Be Afriad To Break The Rules

"Hey man, you got the time?..."

A harmless enough question. Most of us wouldn't hesitate to look down at our phones or watches and respond. After all, it's the polite thing to do, right?

You may not know it, but most predators are quite switched on to human behaviour. They rely on you to react a certain way...to 'follow the rules' so-to-speak.

They love rule-followers because they can predict their actions. If they can predict their actions, it makes it all the easier to plan an attack strategy.

Much can (and has been) written about the many ways predators act and how they can be countered. The specific aim of this article is to explore how they take advantage of our societies' codes of conduct to achieve their goals.

Most people in civil society tend to have a  problem being perceived as behaving improperly around others. This is mostly a good thing, as a society without rules is likely not one many of us would prefer to live in.

Unfortunately, this also makes a large portion of people predictable in specific circumstances; and by 'predictable' I mean 'exploitable'.

Female Cop Shares Common Personal Safety Pitfalls Experienced by Women

Let's start this blog by stating obviously that a woman is NEVER at fault for being a victim of any type of assault. However, we all have the power to make choices that reduce our risk of being targeted. A female officer from the U.S. shared her tips for women to be safer in the daily lives. Please share this information with as many people as you know - it could save a life!

The officer's job was to review criminal and psychiatric files of imprisoned sex offenders who were approaching their release date. Through her reading of hundreds of files, she noticed some common pitfalls women had fallen into - pitfalls that could be avoided with some awareness to the subjects. Note: these tips can be applied to anyone really, but these are specific to scenarios that have lead to a woman being sexually assaulted.

How to Keep Your Krav Maga Real with Environmental Training

preview

‘Krav Maga - the self-defence system for reality’... but, if you stay in the comfort of your own gym/dojo, then are you really preparing yourself 100% for reality?

Maybe, maybe not! We believe that if you’re not training in different environments and in different scenarios then you’re missing out on a vital part of Krav Maga training. When you don’t regularly put yourself in different environments, you can develop a false sense of reality and what is required of you to be successful in your personal protection.

Ditching the name 'Krav Maga'... It's time to get political

I’ll be talking to a guy (no names yet) on Friday on a new upcoming Krav Chats Podcast who is quite a popular Krav Maga student & teacher. Most people that know their shit, will be able to guess who I am talking about by the end of this post...

This guy has recently taken ‘Krav Maga’ off his brand name. He has done this because he feels KM has been too tainted with the BS from mainstream organisations and the politics that come with it. He claims that most do a lot of Krav Maga talk, but don't honour the principles and the axioms that Krav Maga is based on. His conflict lies in that he feels he is more Krav Maga than Krav Maga, but everyone else is claiming 'Krav Maga' even though they don't stay true to it.

Here's my perspective...

Got Rhythm? Learn how rhythms can make your Krav Maga more unpredictable.

Using different rhythms in Krav Maga can give you distinct advantages in many different situations. They can help you control the pace of a fight, create opportunities for counters and make you less predictable as a Krav Maga practitioner.

In most organisations, students will have to wait until they are at Graduate levels to learn this tactic. We disagree with this wait time, and think it is essential for a student to know at the beginning stages of their learning for the above benefits that it can provide. The following are the four main types of rhythms, with video examples where I show you what they should look like.
